Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins believes Jose Mourinho will go after Willian, instead of Mesut Ozil in the summer.
The Portuguese manager signed Willian from Anzhi in 2013 for the London club, and the winger has helped Chelsea win two league titles in his time at the club.
But, he has since fallen down in the pecking order at Chelsea with Antonio Conte preferring to play Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata in Chelsea’s new 3-5-2 formation.
Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil is also on the former Real Madrid manager’s radar, with the German looking to reunite with his former manager at Los Blancos.
Ozil was sensational in the white for Real and he enjoyed some of his most successful years under Mourinho.
However, Wilkins believes Mourinho will try to lure the winger from Chelsea in the summer, already capturing Nemanja Matic this season.
Wilkins told Sportingbet: “Mesut Ozil won’t go to Old Trafford because he doesn’t have the work ethic that Mourinho looks for in his players.
“I actually see Willian as being the likely player to head to Old Trafford. Jose is an enormous admirer of Willian and he would be a special signing for United, but I pray that Chelsea don’t let him go.”
The 61-year-old also thinks Ozil is more suited to football in Germany, rather than having to deal with the physicality in England.
He continued: “Ozil needs to go back to Germany, enjoy his football again and get around the pitch as he likes doing. In the Premier League, you need to work hard defensively for your team, and I don’t think Mesut does that enough. Against Spurs, he was excellent in doing that, tracking Christian Eriksen, but he needs to do that every game, it can’t be one game in 20.”
